Great fall color hikes and walks in Manitowoc & Two Rivers
It’s easy to find fall color on the shores of Lake Michigan in Manitowoc and Two Rivers—here are five places that are perfect for a seasonal hike.
Point Beach State Forest
Walk along the shores of Lake Michigan (there are 6 miles of sandy beach to explore) or take in the sights on several hiking trails in this 3,000-acre state forest north of Two Rivers. Hiking trails include the 0.75-mile Swales Nature Trail, the 2.8-mile Red Pine Trail, and the Ridges Trail, which offers loops of 1.5, 2.3, and 2.4 miles. Several other trail systems pass through the park, including the Rawley Point Bicycle Trail and the Ice Age National Scenic Trail (see below).
Woodland Dunes Nature Center
Head to Two Rivers to find this beautiful attraction that boasts seven miles of hiking trails that traverse many different types of landscapes, from marshes to conifer forests. There’s also an observation tower that offers outstanding views of the surrounding area.
Silver Creek Park
This large park—a popular destination in all seasons—sits on the shores of Lake Michigan in the city of Manitowoc and offers scenic views along several miles of hiking and walking trails. A small creek passes through the park, which is also home to a 36-hole disc golf course, a playground, picnic areas and a fieldhouse.
Devil’s River State Recreation Trail
This multipurpose trail covers more than 14 miles from Rockwood Road in Manitowoc to the village of Denmark in Brown County. Towering steel trestle bridges cross Devil’s River and a small tributary, offering outstanding views of the surrounding scenery.
Ice Age National Scenic Trail
Wisconsin’s 1,200-mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail is a popular recreational route across the state (in fact, it ends in Sturgeon Bay, about 60 miles from Manitowoc), and there are several scenic sections of the route to explore in Manitowoc and Two Rivers. Eight miles of the Ice Age Trail pass through Point Beach State Forest, and a roughly 3-mile segment can be found in Woodland Dunes Nature Center. The city of Manitowoc segment is home to 7.5 miles of trail, and 3 additional miles pass through Two Rivers.
