Stitching a Beloved Community Sewing Circle

This event will be held at the Manitowoc Public Library.
Join Melissa Blount for a social justice sewing circle where we will explore the ways textile arts have contributed to the women’s empowerment movement. No previous sewing skills required. All materials will be provided. This event is free and open to the public.

This event is part of our BIWOC (Black, Indigenous, Women of Color) 2024 summit at the museum. Bringing their amazing energy and artistic vision back to Hamilton, Melissa Blount, Jenn Graves, and Desiree Aspiras will be on site for two weeks to print, offer a workshop and on-site gallery talk, and conduct a sewing circle.

Instructor:
Visiting BIWOC artist Melissa Blount is an artist, writer, and licensed clinical psychologist who creates print and textile pieces that explore the notions of trauma, gender, class and white supremacy. Through community sewing circles she cultivates unique opportunities for people to bear witness to the unjust and violent loss of life in communities of color. Melissa’s decades of experience as a clinician finds its way into all of her endeavors including as a founding board member of two local Evanston nonprofits and advisory board member for two others. Her works as been exhibited nationally including at Lubeznik Center for the Arts, the Museum of Science and Industry, and the Evanston Art Center. Historic and contemporary influences include the Gee’s Bend Quilters Collective, Amos Kennedy, Ben Blount, Bryan Stevenson, and bell hooks.
