Book and a Movie/“The Hate U Give”
Tragically, it’s a story that you could hear on any nightly newscast. A young person of color is murdered by a police officer after the officer mistakes an object—a cell phone, a hair brush, a wallet—for a gun and discharges their weapon to protect themselves from perceived danger, killing a non-combative individual in the process. But, what happens if there’s a witness? What happens to their life after the tragedy? What story plays out for them? That’s the central issue in “The Hate u Give,” the American dramatic film based on the Young Adult novel by Angie Thomas of the same name. One huge question remains—which version does a better job of putting this tragic tale before the public: the book or the movie? You’ll have the opportunity to discuss this oft-debated point if you attend Manitowoc Public Library’s “Book and a Movie” at Lakeshore Cinema—1118 Washington Street—on Monday, February 17 at 7 PM. Watch the movie and then participate in the discussion of the book versus the movie that follows. Books can be checked out prior to the screening at Manitowoc Public Library. Admission is FREE!!!
