Celebrate National Dairy Month in Manitowoc & Two Rivers
June is National Dairy Month, and there’s no shortage of places to go in Manitowoc and Two Rivers to get your fix, whether you’re craving aged cheddar or looking for two scoops of ice cream on a warm summer day. Here’s a look at a few places to find dairy deliciousness on the shores of Lake Michigan.
Beernsten’s Confectionary
No trip to Manitowoc is complete without a trip to this downtown institution, which has been serving locals and visitors alike for nearly a century. Build your own sundae, enjoy homemade chocolates and candies, or stop by for lunch or dinner and enjoy the historical ambience from one of Beerntsen’s iconic black walnut booths.
Cedar Crest Ice Cream
Cedar Crest’s manufacturing plant just south of downtown Manitowoc is also home to an ice cream parlor that sells more than 30 flavors of hand-dipped ice cream, sherbet, and frozen yogurt. You can also enjoy sundaes, malts, and other delicious frozen treats. It’s easy to spot, too—just look for the big cow on the front lawn!
The Cheese Nook
Follow U.S. Highway 10 west of Two Rivers and you’ll find this specialty shop in the Cenex Store. Stock up on wide variety of cheeses—including curds, string cheese, and whips—and you can also purchase meats, local honey, jams, jellies, syrup, and more.
Henning’s Cheese
Located in Kiel, which is about a 30-minute drive from Manitowoc, this family-owned cheese factory has been in business since 1914 and still makes a wide array of delicious dairy products. Visitors can watch the cheesemaking process, learn about the company’s history at the free museum, and head to the factory store to buy cheeses, wine, souvenirs, and more.
Pine River Dairy
Got a quarter? Then you can enjoy a hand-dipped ice cream cone at Pine River Dairy that’s just a short drive west of downtown Manitowoc. The dairy store also sells more than 250 varieties of cheese, as well as other food, gifts, and souvenirs. Visitors can also get a glimpse into dairy production thanks to the observation window that overlooks the dairy’s butter manufacturing process.
